5 Free Rewards/ Incentives for Elementary School Students

Using incentives can be a great way to motivate and reward students. Here are some effective and free incentives that have worked well with my elementary kiddos!

Offering extra recess time is a great whole group incentive that promotes unity and encourages cooperation. This can be earned in a couple of different ways. One option is picking a secret student, or the entire class can use an incentive chart!
SO many kids love to help. When using jobs as an incentive, I try to assign special roles or responsibilities that match the child’s personality, because while some may love the opportunity to be a gym class helper with younger students, others

would much prefer to deliver mail to teachers throughout the school. This incentivizer has the added bonus of increasing confidence and giving the child a sense of control.
Never underestimate the power of calling a parent with the child on speaker and bragging about
their day. Many of the kids that struggle with behavior have far too many negative calls home.
Positive phone calls can not only act as an incentive for the student, but are equally
rewarding for their parent. Plus, a study conducted by researchers at Harvard found
that an increase in teacher-parent communication positively affected students’
engagement, homework completion, behavior and focus!
My students feel so special when they get to waltz past their peers in the cafeteria and sashay to a fun lunch in my office. Turn on their favorite tunes and jam out while they eat and talk about their day.

I work in a district where students wear uniforms and they will work their butts off to earn a “dress down dollar”. In schools without uniforms, allowing students to earn the opportunity to dress up for a fancy or theme day can be equally as rewarding.
